Lunar Outpost deploys air quality IoT network in Denver schools with Particle, winning $1M

Lunar Outpost, a space resource company, partnered with the city of Denver to address the challenge of childhood asthma exacerbated by poor air quality in public schools. They sought to build an IoT network to monitor pollutants but initially faced issues with cellular connectivity using another provider. This led them to the vendor Particle for its connectivity solutions and the Particle E Series for their long-term cellular deployment needs.

By implementing Particle's connectivity and Device Cloud, Lunar Outpost successfully deployed its Canary Series air quality sensors across Denver schools. The solution provided highly localized, actionable data, leading to recommendations that improved air quality and student health. The project's success helped Denver win a $1 million grant to expand the program. Furthermore, Particle enabled Lunar Outpost to add advanced capabilities, like detecting pollutants in parts per billion, which expanded the technology's use cases to other industries such as oil and gas and wildfire management.
