How Iot-driven Data is Helping Service Thread Reduce Costs and Improve Efficiencies

Logical Advantage was tasked with delivering an affordable, scalable way to monitor spindle-level utilization at Service Thread’s large yarn and thread factory, where thousands of spindles across many machine types made manual inspections slow, error-prone, and expensive. To avoid complex PLC reprogramming and hundreds of annual inspection hours, Logical Advantage partnered with Particle and used the Particle Photon and Particle Cloud platform to capture spindle status wirelessly.

Logical Advantage’s solution used Photon-based hardware that monitors 16 spindles per device, streams data through the Particle Cloud to Azure IoT Hub, and supports mobile provisioning and OTA updates—benefits enabled by Particle. A 24-spindle pilot showed utilization was about 15% lower than estimated, informed a $400,000 capital purchase that consolidated capacity, and is projected to reduce per‑spindle operating costs by at least 50% and save roughly $117,000 per year in maintenance overtime and overhead.
