University of Hull Educates Students in Software Development Using Parasoft C/C++test

The University of Hull’s Computer Science department, led by senior lecturer Warren Viant, needed a way to teach C/C++ best practices to large cohorts (150–200 undergraduates) while providing consistent, actionable feedback. With limited staff time in lab settings, it was difficult to give each student the guidance required to write safe, maintainable, industry-ready code.

To solve this, Hull integrated Parasoft C/C++test into its BSc and MSc/MEng labs, using customized static-analysis rule sets aligned to standards like MISRA, AUTOSAR, CERT and the C++ Core Guidelines. The tool delivers automated, explainable feedback (without auto-fixing), freeing instructors to focus on advanced topics; after nearly a decade of use, graduates are better prepared for roles in gaming, robotics, automotive, aerospace, medical and other industries, and the department has sustained its reputation for producing workplace-ready developers.
