Smiths Medical Delivers Safe, High-Quality Medical Devices With Test-Driven Development

Smiths Medical, a global maker of specialty medical devices for infusion therapy, vascular access, and vital care, needed to ensure safety-critical software met strict verification and validation requirements. Previous test automation efforts had failed, so the team sought a low‑learning‑curve solution that would support test-driven development (TDD), integrate with their CI pipeline and embedded toolchain, run on host, simulator and ARM targets, and provide tool‑qualification evidence without vendor lock‑in.

After evaluating commercial and open source options, Smiths Medical adopted Parasoft C/C++test and Parasoft DTP, combined with training to shift the team to TDD. The integrated solution delivered automated host/target testing, traceability, and qualification kits; as a result test stability improved, the open-to-closed defect ratio trended to zero, code coverage rose above 70%, code complexity fell below 15, and overall test and development efficiency increased while reducing maintenance overhead versus a full open source approach.
