Simultaneously Realizing High Levels of Security and a Significant Reduction to Operating Costs Using a Thin Client

Kawaguchi-Shinkin Bank, a regional financial institution with 45 branches in Saitama Prefecture, faced rising cybersecurity risks and mounting operational burdens from about 400 Windows PCs. With growing incidents of targeted attacks, legacy Windows environments (including the end of Windows XP support) and dispersed data on individual machines made data leaks and time‑consuming, on-site maintenance increasingly untenable for the small systems team.

The bank implemented a thin client environment using Parallels Remote Application Server after a year-long trial and full rollout in August 2015. By centralizing desktops and applications on servers (thin clients have no local hard drives), security improved and data‑leak risk dropped, while patching, updates and recovery became much faster. Support and indirect costs fell dramatically—staffing needs dropped from six to four—and branch downtime and travel for repairs were largely eliminated, delivering significant operational savings and more reliable service.
