California Reopenings Snapshots From Orange Unified

Orange USD, a school district in California, faced the challenge of maintaining educational continuity and ensuring student success during the disruptions caused by COVID-19 and wildfires. The district was concerned about a growing equity gap and sought to provide immediate academic support to help students, particularly with core subjects and writing, when they struggled with assignments outside of classroom hours.

The district implemented the tutoring and support services from Paper. Following a successful pilot, Orange USD expanded Paper's access from a single high school to all high school students and then to grades 4-6, growing from 194 to over 16,000 students served. The solution provided 24/7 on-demand help, using a method that guides students to find answers themselves. The district reported receiving positive feedback from parents and students, and the program played a key role in closing learning gaps and supporting students through a hybrid learning model.
