A New Approach to Academic Support Brings Equity to a Diverse School District

South San Francisco USD, a diverse K-12 district serving 8,438 students, needed a more equitable way to provide academic support. Its traditional homework center model made it hard to track attendance and student needs, conflicted with families’ schedules, and became especially difficult to sustain during Covid when teacher time was stretched thin. The district turned to Paper to help deliver tutoring and homework support beyond the limits of after-school hours.

Paper implemented a structured rollout of its on-demand educational support system, giving students 24/7 access to 1:1 homework help, writing feedback, and study support in multiple languages. The district quickly saw organic student usage, stronger feedback from students and teachers, and valuable data on learning gaps that informed instruction, especially in math. South San Francisco USD also reported reduced teacher workload, stronger support for AP students, and enough confidence in Paper to consider replacing the homework center model long term.
