BC Métis Federation launches Michif mobile app with Paper Leaf and 1,000 audio files

Paper Leaf partnered with the BC Métis Federation (BCMF) to address the challenge of preserving the Michif language. Their goal was to create a digital tool for language learning and cultural reconnection that was accessible to users of all technical abilities, particularly elders, and that could function reliably in low-connectivity environments like remote cultural camps.

Paper Leaf designed and built an offline-first mobile app using React Native. The solution featured an audio-supported glossary with approximately 1,000 pronunciation files and an accessible interface. The resulting Michif mobile app, launched in March 2025, provides a dependable way for community members to engage with their language anywhere, and BCMF was extremely happy with the flexible, easy-to-manage final product.
