Creating a Modular, Interactive Learning Tool for The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco with Drupal 8

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF), the city’s largest public arts institution, engaged web agency Palantir.net three months before a major exhibition to deepen visitor engagement by creating “Digital Stories” — interactive microsites combining visual, audio, and written content. The short timeline and need for a reusable authoring tool for museum staff, plus an initial hosting platform that proved incompatible with Drupal 8, made the project especially challenging.

Palantir built a modular Drupal 8 solution deployed on Pantheon, using Terminus for configuration export and training the museum team to maintain and spin up new microsites. The sites (e.g., Monet and Summer of Love) feature zoomable images, layered text and audio, and four reskinned themes for easy reuse; early results show the Monet site with over 30,000 views, the Summer of Love site nearly 30,000, average page times of 4–5 minutes, and plans to produce 4–5 exhibit sites per year.
