Case Study: Patch achieves scalable hyperlocal publishing with Pantheon

A Pantheon Case Study

Preview of the Patch Case Study

A New Media Model Calls for New Media Technology

Patch is a nationwide hyperlocal media platform serving more than 900 communities, but its massive content footprint—thousands of articles a day, millions of users, and huge traffic spikes—made infrastructure management a constant challenge. Patch turned to Pantheon to help run its Drupal-based stack so the team could focus on growth, innovation, and uptime instead of maintaining complex hosting.

Pantheon supported Patch’s decoupled Drupal architecture, Varnish caching, and large-scale migration from legacy infrastructure, helping the team consolidate from 2,684 domains and 96 servers down to a far simpler platform. The result was faster performance, stronger risk mitigation, and reliable scale: Patch now reaches about 50 million pageviews a month with 99.969% uptime, serves pages in roughly 240 milliseconds, and can handle spikes of up to 3 million pageviews in a day without downtime.
