Using Social-Emotional Learning Data in Long Beach Unified School District

Long Beach Unified School District (Long Beach Unified School District) serves 75,000 students across 84 schools and partnered with Panorama Education to incorporate social‑emotional learning (SEL) and school climate data into school improvement. When Panorama’s Social‑Emotional Learning Surveys and Data Analytics showed MacArthur Elementary had only 53% favorable responses on growth mindset—placing the school in the bottom 20th percentile—district and school leaders faced the challenge of strengthening students’ beliefs about learning to support academic progress.

Using Panorama Education’s surveys and interactive dashboards, MacArthur set a clear growth‑mindset goal and implemented teacher professional development, parent workshops, and classroom lessons tied to neuroscience and mindset strategies. Panorama’s data enabled ongoing monitoring: growth mindset rose from 53% to 81% in one year and 86% by 2017 (a 33‑point gain over three years), while Smarter Balanced scores improved—ELA from 36% to 56% (±20 points) and math from 29% to 46% (±17 points)—with large subgroup gains (e.g., Hispanic ELA +18 points, African‑American math +20 points), narrowing achievement gaps.
