How a Survey of 34,000 Students Informs Ector County ISD’s Reopening Plans

Ector County Independent School District, based in Odessa, Texas, serves 34,000 students, 56% of whom live in poverty. During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the district faced low student engagement, stress, and limited internet access as it moved quickly to remote learning for grades PreK-12.

Ector County ISD partnered with Panorama Education to create surveys for students and staff about wellbeing, distance learning, and access to resources. The results showed that 39% of students sometimes, rarely, or never had internet access at home, and the district used that data to launch a family support help desk, work on broadband access, and guide reopening plans focused on equity and learning recovery.
