A Panopto Case Study
Lancaster University’s Digital Technologies Unit began piloting Panopto in 2012 to give students on-demand access to lectures. When one popular course outgrew its 300-seat lecture theatre with 350 students signed up, the team needed a fast, low‑resource way to deliver the same content to an overflow room without tying up staff just before term started.
They used Panopto’s live‑broadcast feature — the recorder’s “broadcast and record” option auto‑generated a URL the overflow room could open to see the lecturer’s video, audio and slides. The fix required only one staff member to monitor playback, resolved the immediate capacity issue, and led Lancaster to plan a wider Panopto rollout for centrally scheduled lecture capture, giving lecturers control over recordings while improving flexibility and reliability.
