A Panopto Case Study
The University of Waikato, a public university in Hamilton, New Zealand, needed a scalable, easy-to-use way to capture and share on-campus lectures beginning in 2009. Tasked with evaluating lecture-capture technologies, the eLearning Centre sought a solution that would let faculty record, stream, and publish lectures without expensive hardware and that would improve access for students juggling work, family, or distance barriers.
Waikato deployed Panopto, a laptop-based recording, webcasting, and video‑content-management system that automatically syncs video, slides, and screen capture and includes searchable transcripts and multi-camera support. The result was rapid adoption across campus, a jump in viewing from about 19 hours/week to over 4,700 hours/week (2009–2011), expanded uses beyond lectures (student pitches, performances, ESOL, screencasts, video feedback), and greater access and learning opportunities for a broader student population.
