University of Porto embraces a streamlined video solution to embed innovation in education

The University of Porto, a century-old, research-led institution with nearly 33,000 students, sought to make video a core part of teaching but faced low faculty adoption due to a complex legacy video system. The Educational Technologies unit needed a secure, easy-to-use, flexible, and scalable platform that integrated with Moodle, supported screen and lecture capture, offered fine-grained permissioning and accessibility features, and could be managed by a small team.

After piloting Panopto, the University rolled it out campus-wide—capitalizing on its simplicity, cloud processing, captioning, and LMS integration—to drive faculty adoption, support students with disabilities, and enable a rapid pivot to remote learning during COVID-19. Results included steady user growth (about 25% year-over-year through 2020), major usage gains (+9% hours recorded, +75% hours viewed, +23% videos recorded), nearly 1 million views/downloads in 4½ months versus 86,000 earlier, only 82 support requests, and expanded use for flipped classes, training, and lifelong-learning initiatives.
