A Panopto Case Study
The University of Birmingham faced a common higher-education challenge: how to engage large cohorts in traditional morning lectures without reducing students to passive recipients. Senior Lecturer Dr Jeremy Pritchard questioned whether the classic lecture format still met modern learners’ needs and sought ways to make contact time more interactive and skills-focused.
Using Panopto’s lecture capture and video tools, Pritchard flipped key lectures (e.g., the Hardy–Weinberg topic) so students watched content in advance and class time became discussion- and workshop-led. He also introduced recorded, screen-captured assignment feedback. The changes boosted student engagement, freed lecturers to develop transferable skills through group work, and delivered clearer, more nuanced feedback that students valued.
