Case Study: National University of Singapore achieves campus-wide scalable lecture capture and better student access with Panopto

Scalable and Extensible Lecture Capture, Integrated with a Custom-Built Learning Management System

The National University of Singapore (NUS) and its Centre for Instructional Technology (CIT) had built a custom learning environment (IVLE) but by 2011 their first‑generation lecture‑capture tools were struggling: recordings were limited to a few centralized studios, internal storage was being strained, older lectures had to be archived offline, and supporting multiple disparate systems was inefficient. NUS sought a scalable, end‑to‑end video platform that would integrate with IVLE and support widespread, instructor‑led recording.

After evaluating options, NUS selected a software‑based solution (Panopto) and deployed it across 70 lecture halls within a semester. The platform enabled remote scheduling and centralized control, secure streaming, searchable video (OCR), and SSO integration; adoption grew campus‑wide, faculty recorded more lectures, students heavily used recordings—especially before exams—and the system was later extended for administrative and training uses.
