A Panopto Case Study
The Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia needed a scalable way to teach and assess presentation skills for large cohorts. Faculty designed a new required Business Communications course where students would give repeated individual and group presentations, but traditional camcorder/DVD workflows and limited class time made regular recording and objective grading impractical for ~400 students.
Using Panopto on standard laptops and small HD cameras in ordinary meeting rooms, Sauder created a cost‑effective “media lab” that recorded 400 presentations in 48 hours (98% within class schedules) with minimal staff. Videos auto-uploaded to the LMS for self- and peer-review, fair grading, and instructor feedback; the program has since scaled to 800–900 students per year and enabled new uses like flipped classrooms and video proctoring.
