Kettering University, a STEM-focused institution known for experiential learning, needed a way to connect growing numbers of out-of-state and distance-learning students — and their families — to campus life and milestone events. Two weeks before the 2015 commencement the university was asked to decide whether and how to livestream the ceremony so remote attendees could participate in real time.

Leveraging its existing Panopto lecture-capture platform plus a few rented cameras and a switcher, the Global Campus team produced an in-house live stream that accounted for 25% of total attendance, integrated with campus digital signage, and drew widespread praise from families worldwide. The project also accelerated Kettering’s move away from mailed DVDs to on-demand video—more than 100 courses uploaded, faculty able to teach remotely, and a redesign of online instruction toward shorter, more engaging content.
