How the University of Verona Saved the Academic Year with their Innovative Learning Technology Ecosystem

The University of Verona’s Information Systems and Technology (IST) team proactively replaced rigid, hardware-based classroom capture with a software-centered learning technology ecosystem beginning in 2018. When Italy’s COVID-19 lockdown hit in March 2020, that early investment became critical: the university needed to keep teaching running remotely despite limited on‑campus recording infrastructure and widespread disruption at other institutions.

By integrating Panopto with Moodle and Zoom, the TID team enabled easy, secure remote recording, automated delivery to course pages, and rapid faculty onboarding (one-hour workshops). The result: the academic year continued uninterrupted, 90% of professors adopted Panopto, the university produced over 35,000 course videos and logged 840,000+ Panopto usage hours in one semester (a 266% rise in recorded lectures), and many instructors have permanently adopted flipped and hybrid teaching methods.
