A Panopto Case Study

How one university in Plymouth turned a challenge with lecture scheduling into an opportunity to improve teaching and learning for all their students

The University of St Mark and St John (Marjon) in Plymouth, known for its strong sports programmes, faced a clash between scheduled lectures and important sporting fixtures that left some students missing classes. Senior e-Learning Technologist Adam Read was asked to find a solution that would support both the university’s commitment to sport and students’ access to teaching, with requirements for an automated system that integrated with their Moodle VLE.

Marjon piloted Panopto, chosen for its automation and seamless Moodle integration, allowing lectures to be recorded automatically and appear in the VLE within an hour with virtually no extra work from staff. The pilot delivered quick staff buy-in and improved access for all students — including those with learning difficulties — and the university is expanding Panopto to more rooms campus-wide to support flipped learning and broader content delivery.
