How Notre Dame Used the Panopto + Zoom Integration to Streamline and Elevate Virtual Learning

The University of Notre Dame faced a rapid shift to virtual and dual‑mode teaching when COVID‑19 hit in 2020, revealing fragmented tools and inconsistent classroom experiences across campus. IT, ND Studios TLT, and learning teams needed to integrate existing systems—primarily Zoom and Panopto—scale solutions quickly, and ensure recordings and access were consistent through the LMS so faculty and students could teach and learn reliably.

Notre Dame implemented the Panopto + Zoom integration, upgraded over 150 teaching spaces (up from about 15–20), standardized classroom hardware and workflows, and built automation (ZAP) and multi‑tier support so instructors simply start a Zoom meeting and recordings auto‑transfer to Panopto. The result was streamlined, equitable dual‑mode learning: skyrocketing adoption, easier remote guest participation, more faculty-created video content and flexible assessments, improved student access and engagement, and a durable platform that keeps the university prepared for future pivots.
