Flipping the Classroom with Video at Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University’s WIMPi project set out to “flip” the classroom and make limited faculty-student contact time more interactive and efficient. Faced with the challenge of reducing one-way lecturing while documenting student progress, faculty needed a reliable, flexible way to deliver recorded lectures, prepare students for lab work, and free class time for discussion and hands-on learning.

WIMPi combined Panopto lecture capture with digital whiteboards, a custom information management system, and iClicker response technology to archive vetted materials, provide instant feedback, and eliminate the need for extensive in-class note-taking. The result: widespread reuse of recorded lectures, higher student engagement and viewing rates, better-prepared lab students, expanded adoption across programs, and the addition of student-created recordings and competency documentation to digital portfolios.
