Enhancing Performing Arts Education with Video In Pedagogy

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), a leading interdisciplinary conservatory, launched a “Video in Pedagogy” (VIP) initiative to use video to enrich instruction across Chinese Opera, Dance, Drama, Music and related schools. Early attempts with single‑camera recordings proved inadequate for capturing the subtle bodywork, facial expressions and synchronized off‑stage activity students need to study and for reliable student assessment.

HKAPA implemented a campus video solution (Panopto) to record multi‑camera performances and make on‑demand, multi‑angle recordings available for review, assessment and flipped‑classroom teaching. The new capability let students pause, rewind and study intricate techniques from multiple viewpoints, supported blended pedagogy, and—according to staff—had a significant positive impact on learning and assessment.
