A Panopto Case Study
The East Asian Academy for New Liberal Arts (a joint research and education program of the University of Tokyo and Peking University) moved courses fully online in early 2020. Faculty quickly realized web conferencing alone (e.g., Zoom) couldn’t replicate in-person pedagogy or support cross‑time‑zone, media‑rich coursework—EAA needed reliable on‑demand video, easy content creation/editing, secure hosting and permissions, and streaming for presentations to blend synchronous and asynchronous learning.
Faculty piloted Panopto to deliver pre‑recorded lectures and multimedia resources in a flipped‑classroom model while keeping live discussions on Zoom. The platform met their technical needs, reduced instructors’ online teaching stress, improved student engagement across time zones, enabled a joint course with Peking University, and has since been adopted more broadly with plans to continue using Panopto for blended learning, events, and international collaborations.
