A Panopto Case Study
Butler University, a private liberal-arts school in Indianapolis, needed a simple, scalable video solution focused on student recordings — not just faculty lecture capture — to support skill assessments, simulations, and flipped-classroom learning. Existing workflows (handheld cameras, DVDs, manual conversions) were time-consuming, limited access for commuting students, and made timely, private feedback difficult for programs in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the College of Education.
After piloting vendors, Butler adopted Panopto: students record on iPads or laptops and videos upload automatically to a secure cloud VCMS with remote recording and timestamped Notes for targeted feedback. The system enabled peer/self-assessment, flipped lectures, and campus-wide sharing; Butler now has 64 Panopto-ready rooms, more than 7,000 hours of video watched, and strong learning outcomes (82% of students reported higher exam grades, 67% improved retention; COPHS found >60% saw grade gains and 74% used recordings to review material).
