Garvan Institute Drives Genomics Revolution in Medicine

Garvan Institute of Medical Research, a Sydney-based life sciences organization with 600 employees, needed to keep pace with a flood of genomics data from its new Illumina HiSeq X Ten sequencers while avoiding added staff and disruption to its 80 researchers. The institute also needed infrastructure that could be installed and maintained easily, since its computing upgrades depended on grant funding and had to support 24/7 performance.

Panasas provided PanFS parallel file system and ActiveStor storage to handle the data load and simplify workflows. Panasas helped Garvan eliminate performance bottlenecks, streamline sequencing analysis, and keep data in central storage throughout processing, boosting sequencing capacity 50x to 50 genomes per day on average, improving productivity for 80 researchers, and delivering results faster without adding staff.
