University of Macau Leverages IT Security and Connectivity Needs of over 8000 Students with Palo Alto Networks

The University of Macau (UM), a leading higher-education institution with over 8,100 students that is building a new campus 20 times larger than its current site, needed a new internet gateway and a powerful firewall to handle sharply increased bandwidth while remaining compatible with existing infrastructure. The ICTO required a smooth migration with little or no downtime and evaluated vendors including Check Point, Juniper and Palo Alto Networks.

After a nine-month evaluation and deployment with local partner Mega, UM installed two Palo Alto Networks PA-5020 next‑generation firewalls (rated to 5Gbps, with 20 virtual routers and 80 security zones) featuring integrated Threat Prevention (IPS, IDS and anti‑malware). The solution met bandwidth targets, delivered granular, user‑based visibility and policy control, simplified maintenance and updates, provided strong local support with minimal downtime, and is scalable to meet future needs.
