The University of Southampton, a research-intensive Russell Group university with over 23,000 students, needed to address rising bandwidth demand, network latency, and mounting security and management challenges as it expanded student housing and research activity. Its incumbent firewalls could not support the required 10Gbps Janet links, lacked visibility and policy management, and hindered HPC and collaboration needs.

Working with Khipu Networks, the university deployed three Palo Alto Networks PA-7050 firewalls with Threat Prevention, IPS, and Panorama (VM) for centralized management. The upgrade delivered 10Gbps connectivity, improved application- and user-level visibility and control, enabled campus BYOD, eliminated throughput and latency bottlenecks, simplified policy management, and allowed the university to expand and better protect services for students and researchers.
