A Palo Alto Networks Case Study
The University of Portsmouth, a top-500 research university with ~22,000 students and 2,500 staff, faced growing pressure on its campus network from widespread BYOD and heavy research workloads. Its incumbent firewalls were limited to 1GB, causing throughput and latency problems, lacking application- and user-level visibility, and were at end-of-support—putting reliability, performance and data protection at risk as tens of thousands of devices connected weekly.
Working with Khipu Networks, the university deployed Palo Alto Networks’ Next‑Generation Security Platform—two PA‑5060s in high availability with Threat Prevention, IPS and Panorama management (VM). The upgrade enabled full use of dual 10GB Janet links, resolved throughput and latency issues, improved application visibility and user-based control, expanded services for staff and students, and simplified security management and monitoring.
