Case Study: University of Sunderland achieves resilient, cost-efficient cybersecurity and secure work‑from‑anywhere with Palo Alto Networks

A Palo Alto Networks Case Study

Preview of the University of Sunderland Case Study

Optimising network security and remote connectivity to drive higher education success

The University of Sunderland, a multi-campus institution of around 27,000 students, faced a major cybersecurity challenge after a significant attack that disrupted operations for days. With a rapidly expanding digital attack surface, limited in-house resources and a growing need for secure remote access in a post‑COVID hybrid environment, the university required a radical, transparent and reliable approach to threat prevention and remediation.

In partnership with KHIPU Networks, Sunderland implemented a single, connected Palo Alto Networks platform—ML‑powered next‑generation firewalls plus Prisma Access and GlobalProtect—to deliver 360° visibility, automated threat detection and secure cloud‑based remote access. The solution reduced administration overhead and costs, enabled secure work‑from‑anywhere for staff and students, and strengthened compliance posture (supporting ISO 27001/CyberEssentials), safeguarding the university’s data, people and services.
