Bank Strengthens Network Security to Combat Growing Malware Threat

Bank Central Asia (BCA), one of Indonesia’s largest retail banks with about 16 million customers, 1,213 branches and 17,207 ATMs, was seeing rapid growth in mobile and internet banking (mobile transactions up ~20% year‑on‑year) and needed an “always‑on” digital experience. Its legacy Layer 3 firewalls could not decrypt SSL, perform URL filtering or prevent modern threats, and the bank lacked granular visibility and effective bandwidth management to safely scale online services.

BCA deployed Palo Alto Networks next‑generation firewalls along with WildFire and Panorama, using App‑ID and User‑ID to classify all traffic (including encrypted flows) and enforce network‑ and application‑layer policies from a single console. Implemented in under two months, the solution delivered real‑time visibility, simplified management and automation, reduced the attack surface, improved threat prevention and bandwidth control, and made partner IP handling and secure rollout of new applications much easier.
