University of Virginia - Customer Case Study

The University of Virginia’s consultant Barbara Tawney was tasked with forecasting patient loads for the Richmond metropolitan hospital system after unpredictable demand had twice pushed all nine hospitals to capacity and forced patient diversions. To tackle this, she used Palisade’s StatTools and NeuralTools to analyze and model historical hospital billing and admission data.

Using Palisade’s StatTools Tawney transformed four years of patient-level data (about 600,000 records across 78 fields) into daily, weekly and event time series, then trained Palisade’s NeuralTools to identify patterns—mid-week peaks, holiday dips and post-holiday surges—and produce forecasts from days to several months out. The Palisade solution enabled more efficient resource allocation and scheduling across the system and gave non‑engineer hospital planners accessible tools to continue forecasting admissions and managing capacity.
