A Palisade Case Study
National Grid UK, the electricity transmission owner for England and Wales and system operator for Great Britain, faced the challenge of planning for rare but high-impact total or partial network failures where real-world testing is infeasible. To measure restoration performance across many uncertain scenarios they used Palisade’s @RISK probabilistic modeling to simulate and evaluate recovery under a wide range of technical, operational and human factors.
Using Palisade’s @RISK, National Grid ran Monte Carlo–style simulations (each model uses about 12,000 @RISK samples, with typical studies mapping the wider space via ~5,000 runs) primed with operational data to produce outputs on restoration times, unsupplied energy, fuel needs, regional congestion points and GDP impacts. The Palisade-powered analysis gave credible performance metrics that informed investment and planning (including industry-wide deployment of diesel and battery backup), optimized resource deployment, and supported policy and regulatory decisions.
