A Palisade Case Study
MonMouth University engaged Palisade to tackle the growing challenge of integrating variable solar and wind generation into utility-scale grids without compromising system stability. Professor Roy Nersesian used Palisade’s @RISK to quantify the uncertainty in renewable output and assess whether pumped-storage electricity storage could convert intermittent renewables into reliable power for utility operators.
Using Palisade’s @RISK (Fit Distribution, Copula) and RISKOptimizer, Nersesian simulated multiple solar and wind sites (starting with three 1‑MW solar and three 1‑MW wind sites), modeled demand and conventional plant dispatch, and sized pumped-storage reservoirs based on design parameters. Palisade’s analysis produced probability distributions and optimization results showing that, with appropriately designed pumped storage capacity, solar and wind can be integrated into large power systems without harming system stability — findings shared via Palisade’s minicourse, whitepaper, and models.
