A Palisade Case Study
London Business School partnered with Palisade to explore a major challenge faced by Novartis Pharma: how to make better R&D project selection and portfolio prioritization decisions in an industry marked by high investment, development failure risk, and commercial uncertainty. Using Palisade’s @RISK and PrecisionTree software, the case study examined the complexity of managing pharmaceutical project portfolios and the need for stronger analytical decision-making.
Palisade’s tools were used by London Business School researchers to demonstrate decision analysis, simulation, and optimization methods for evaluating and improving portfolio choices at Novartis. The work helped illustrate how Novartis’s Innovation Management Board and portfolio group could support more rigorous project prioritization, and the case study earned the 2004 INFORMS Case Competition award, highlighting its impact and recognition in operations research.
