Helicopter Manufacturer AgustaWestland Uses @RISK to Inform Major Company Decisions

AgustaWestland, an Anglo‑Italian helicopter manufacturer and a Finmeccanica company, needed to evaluate the financial feasibility of long, complex new‑product programs (3–5 years to market with ~20‑year lifecycles) under significant uncertainty. To build robust financial business cases and support senior management decisions about which helicopters to develop, AgustaWestland adopted Palisade’s @RISK (part of the DecisionTools Suite).

Using Palisade’s @RISK the Risk Assessment, Feasibility Analysis and Business Cases team ran Monte Carlo simulations with triangular, PERT and normal input distributions to produce probabilistic outputs for revenue, EBIT, NPV and IRR and generated tornado sensitivity graphs to pinpoint high‑impact inputs. The Palisade solution delivered measurable, decision‑grade results (cumulative distributions for IRR/NPV and sensitivity analyses), clarified forecast accuracy, enabled targeted mitigation actions (for example cost controls with engineering), and strengthened senior management’s ability to assess, control and drive program selection.
