A Palisade Case Study
DNV GL, the global ship and offshore classification and safety organisation, needed to assess and mitigate risks to ships and ship systems—determining both the probability of incidents (collision, grounding, fire/explosion, etc.) and the range of their consequences despite limited and uncertain input data. To meet this challenge, DNV GL applied Palisade’s DecisionTools Suite, specifically PrecisionTree and @RISK, to support its quantitative risk assessment work.
Palisade’s PrecisionTree was used to build event and fault trees that map incident sequences, while @RISK provided Monte Carlo simulation and probability distributions to make input uncertainty explicit. Together these tools enabled DNV GL to quantify occurrence probabilities from casualty data, run cost‑benefit analyses of mitigation measures, inform Formal Safety Assessment processes, and support safer, more cost‑effective design and operational decisions—improving clarity around uncertainty and the economic feasibility of risk‑reduction strategies.
