ADWEC uses @RISK from Palisade to forecast water demand in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Company (ADWEC), the single buyer and seller of water and power in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, needed a more rigorous way to forecast desalinated potable water demand to plan capacity expansion and meet regulatory requirements. Faced with uncertainties such as seasonal variation, plant outages, population growth and water losses—and a 2006 Regulation and Supervision Bureau mandate for probabilistic, risk-based forecasting—ADWEC adopted Palisade’s @RISK to replace simple high/average/low scenarios with a stochastic approach.

Using Palisade’s @RISK, ADWEC combined bottom-up demand-category modeling with Monte Carlo simulation and probability distributions to produce risk-based forecasts through 2030. The Palisade solution improved reporting and model flexibility, delivered forecasts with a high degree of accuracy and confidence, reduced the risk of over- or under-installing desalination capacity, met regulatory expectations, and contributed to Abu Dhabi’s reliable, cost‑effective water supply.
