Virginia Tech Maps Out Problems with PRTG

Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) manages a highly distributed environment with 123 facilities across Virginia, including rural offices, research centers, and hundreds of network devices. Network engineer Mark Crawford needed a simpler, more organized way to monitor this scattered infrastructure than the previous WhatsUp Gold setup, especially for browser-based visibility and easier day-to-day management. Paessler AG’s PRTG Network Monitor was chosen to provide a clearer, more logical overview of the network.

With Paessler AG’s PRTG, CALS gained centralized monitoring of public and private networks, SAN units, servers, access points, and other devices, along with flexible alerting to route issues to the right local IT staff or help desk team. The mapping and traffic analysis features helped Crawford quickly identify bandwidth hogging and pinpoint user-level problems, reducing routine support calls and saving significant time and effort.
