IKEA, a global furniture retailer, faced the challenge of optimizing its complex global packaging supply chain for over 12,000 diverse products while responding to external pressure for greater sustainability. To tackle this, IKEA worked with vendor Packhelp to explore innovative plant-based packaging materials.

Packhelp helped IKEA implement a solution that included mushroom-based (mycelium) packaging and a continued focus on fiber-based cardboard. This mix of innovative and recycled materials resulted in a 90% reduction in carbon emissions from the new packaging type and allowed IKEA to make over 92% of its annual packaging fiber-based and easily recyclable. The efforts by Packhelp and IKEA significantly reduced plastic usage and strengthened the company's position as a sustainable market leader.
