Case Study: Quay achieves faster, more secure container builds with Packet

A Packet Case Study

Building An Infrastructure Business Out of A Startup’s NeedBuilding An Infrastructure Business Out of A Startup’s Need

Quay, the container image registry and developer tools company founded in New York City in 2012, needed a faster and more secure way to run its build workloads. As its team scaled, it wanted to give Docker engines a more native environment for builds without sacrificing isolation, and Packet’s bare metal cloud became the infrastructure choice for that need.

By using Packet to run virtual machines on Kubernetes, Quay built its own GCE-like build cluster on bare metal with nested virtualization support. Packet enabled Quay to start VMs in about 6 seconds and have them ready for builds in around 30 seconds, much faster than its EC2 cluster, while also avoiding EC2’s hourly billing model and achieving a better cost and user experience.
