Saving over £110 million on a new submarine for the Royal Navy

PA Consulting worked with the UK Ministry of Defence to support one of its most complex equipment programmes: the delivery of seven Astute-class nuclear-powered submarines. With the sixth submarine already under construction, the MOD needed help negotiating the final contract and accelerating a highly complex approvals process that normally takes 115 days but had only 30 days remaining.

PA Consulting reviewed the build programme and costs, built evidence to support negotiations, and created a detailed plan to secure ministerial sign-off quickly while ensuring proper scrutiny. As a result, PA Consulting helped the MOD secure approvals in 30 days, 85 days faster than usual, and achieve £110 million in savings on the £1.4 billion contract.
