Protecting troops’ lives in Afghanistan

PA Consulting worked with the UK Ministry of Defence to help protect troops in Afghanistan. The MOD needed a fast, practical way to detect improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on routes, but off-the-shelf systems were designed for manned vehicles and a fully custom unmanned solution would have taken too long.

PA Consulting developed “Panama,” an unmanned vehicle-based IED detection system built using obsolete Snatch Land Rovers and a proven detection capability. The solution keeps crews out of harm’s way, searches routes at least 10 times faster, reached operational use in just 11 months, and is expected to deliver £17M in savings.
