Helping people live independently for longer using consumer technology

Hampshire County Council partnered with PA Consulting to explore how digital technology could help people using social care services live more independently for longer. The council wanted innovative, practical ways to improve independence and wellbeing, using consumer technology such as Amazon Echo and other connected devices.

PA Consulting trialled Amazon Echo with 50 adults receiving social care support, built skills for medication reminders and heating control, and created a “My Carer” app to help carers add tasks and share information securely. The pilot had strong results, with 72% of users saying it improved their lives and 68% saying it helped maintain their independence, and it won the 2018 ITEC Award for Innovation in Technology Enabled Care.
