Developing lightweight recyclable packaging for a craft spirits company

Dunnet Bay Distillers, a Scottish craft spirits producer known for Rock Rose Gin, wanted to grow in the UK and US while reducing its environmental footprint. To do that, the company needed a lighter, lower-cost, recyclable packaging solution for its gin and vodka, and turned to PA Consulting for help.

PA Consulting designed a closed-loop recyclable pouch system for 700 ml spirits, including packaging design, IP landscape analysis, prototype development, and support in finding recycling partners and a Royal Mail return process. The solution cut packaging weight from 750 grams to 12.6 grams, reduced packaging and shipping costs by £10.20 per case, increased storage capacity by 75%, and enabled customers to return empty pouches by post for recycling instead of sending them to landfill.
