Boosting California's use of renewable energy by developing the world's biggest battery

Vistra Energy, a US power company, wanted to bid on a major battery storage project in California to support the state’s renewable energy goals and diversify beyond coal and gas-fired generation. PA Consulting helped assess whether the proposed 300 MW battery investment made economic sense, using market and revenue analysis to evaluate the opportunity.

PA Consulting built the business case by projecting revenues from the wider market, accounting for competition, regulation, and fluctuating energy values. The analysis showed the investment was viable, and Vistra Energy became one of three successful bidders. The battery will provide storage for enough electricity to power more than 250,000 homes and help bring California closer to its renewable energy targets.
