Bearpac Medical improves MPE drainage with PA Consulting’s FDA-approved Passio system

PA Consulting partnered with Bearpac Medical, a medical device start-up focused on improving care for patients with malignant pleural effusion. The challenge was to innovate beyond outdated, decades-old drainage devices that caused patient discomfort and offered users little control during a stressful home care procedure.

The solution developed by PA Consulting was the Passio™ Pump Drainage System, a user-centric, handheld disposable device. PA provided end-to-end services including user research, design, and prototyping, resulting in a system that operates at significantly lower pressure, gives patients direct control over flow, and simplifies waste disposal. As a result, PA Consulting helped Bearpac achieve FDA approval for a device that improves patient comfort and control, with a final design ready for engineering and market entry.
