PA Consulting partnered with Backbone, a platform for mobile game streaming, which had a vision to create a new portable gaming controller to harness the power of iPhones for a superior gaming experience. The challenge was to design and launch an industry-defining hardware product that could capture share in the fast-growing mobile gaming market.

The solution involved PA Consulting providing end-to-end product design and development, including industrial design, user experience, and a unique hinged mechanism. The resulting Backbone One controller launched in October 2020 and became the #1 best-selling mobile game controller on Amazon within its category. PA Consulting's work helped Backbone win a Red Dot Design Award, secure a partnership with Sony for a PlayStation Edition, and have the controller bundled with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
