Virtual Simulation in the Time of Covid-19 With Pace University

Pace University’s Lienhard School of Nursing faced the sudden cancellation of on-site clinical placements during the COVID-19 pandemic and needed a realistic, on-demand way for students to complete clinical hours and develop clinical decision-making skills. Faculty selected Oxford Medical Simulation’s OMS VR system to recreate virtual ward experiences that let students take histories, run investigations, administer medications, and receive detailed feedback in lifelike scenarios.

Oxford Medical Simulation worked with Pace to integrate OMS scenarios into a full virtual clinical day (synchronous Zoom sessions, prework, group care plans and individual assessments), provided 24/7 educational support, and helped secure New York State approval to count virtual simulation for 50% of required clinical hours. The deployment enabled 200 students to run 2,475 virtual scenarios (559 hours of in-scenario time) in 60 days, improved students’ clinical reasoning and preparedness for certifications, and kept cohorts on track to graduate.
